Halloween Candy and Orthodontic Braces

Halloween, one of the most popular days of the year for candy lovers! But will your orthodontic braces stop you from having some treats?

Enjoying some candy when wearing braces doesn't have to be a nightmare. The first thing to remember, whenever you're thinking of eating sweet, sticky food is that your toothbrush needs to be close by so that you can give your teeth, and braces, a good brush when you're done eating.

Try to avoid Halloween candy that is really sticky and chewy - sorry no toffee this year!

The stickier or chewier the candy the more chance there is of damaging your brackets. Sticky residue will also make keeping your teeth and braces clean very challenging. Hard candy should also be avoided as the biting into anything hard could pop a bracket off - no fun!

If you're going to be having some treats this Halloween, try to chose soft chocolate, like a peanut butter cup, or something similar that will literally melt in your mouth.

Don't be scared to have fun this Halloween, but remember to brush and floss and smile!

When Is It Time To See A Calgary Orthodontist

Seeing a certified orthodontist is a great step in ensuring that your child's dental health is being well taken care of.  But when is the right time to seek an orthodontic consultation?

Orthodontists suggest that an appointment to review a child's bite should be sought around the age of 7. This is a stage in a child's development that may reveal any possible future concerns.

However, it's never too early to seek the opinion of a Calgary Orthodontist if you or your General Dentist have concerns regarding your child's bite.

Ensuring that a child's bite is healthy doesn't just involve looking at teeth, and if they are straight.
An orthodontist will pay close attention to the development of the dental arches, skeletal development along with the individual teeth.

If you, or your child, are in need of an orthodontic consultation; call us today 403-287-076.
We are happy to answer questions and arrange an appointment.

Orthodontic Braces In Calgary - What Are Your Options?

Orthodontics is certainly a sought after treatment option for pre-teen, teenagers and adults due to today's esthetically pleasing orthodontic systems.

When considering orthodontic treatment it's important to focus on the end goal - a beautiful, 'healthy smile' that lasts.

Patients seeking orthodontic care present with different needs and 'bite' challenges; therefore the treatment plan is customized by the orthodontist to meet the goals of each patient.  This means that the orthodontist is famliar and comfortable using various differnet orthodontic systems, so that the needs of the patient can be met.

Don't lose sight of what's important - a successful orthodontic case that keeps you smiling forever.
Whether it's Invisalign, SureSmile or the Damon System options are available to create your perfect smile.

Considering Braces In Calgary? Get The Straight Talk First

There's a lot of information available to the public regarding different types of braces and  orthodontic systems.  If you're considering orthodontic treatment, it can be hard to sift through the advertising to get to the important message; what orthodontic option is right for you.

Seeing a Certified Orthodontist is a good place to start, as their exposure to different techniques, philosophies and systems helps them provide the best options for their patients.

It also allows them to predict if/when treatment might be more complex because they've treated and seen so many orthodontic cases.  This knowledge and experience means that the orthodontic patient will be offered the right treatment plan for their case and be supported throughout the treatment phase.

Orthodontic treatment is an exciting time but consists of a commitment of time, funds and energy.  This commitment is shared by the orthodontist so it's important to chose the right orthodontist for you - that way you'll be smiling all the time!

Dr. Cory Liss is a certified orthodontist in NW Calgary. Call today to schedule an appointment and discover more about orthodontic options.

Great Teeth In Calgary

Now that you have your orthodontic braces on you need to pay special attention to brushing and flossing.

Remember food can get trapped around braces,

so you have to make sure that you're brushing regularly to avoid an increase risk of tooth decay.

Keep a toothbrush with you and brush after each snack and meal.  Try to avoid drinking sugary sodas and skip the chewy, sticky candies.  Eating an apple and a piece of cheese makes for a healthy snack and reduces the amount of sugars/acids in the mouth.

This Calgary Orthodontic Office wants you to have the best smile ever. That means not just straight teeth, but healthy teeth that are cavity free. Have fun on your summer vacation, but don't forget to pack your tooth brush and floss!

Did you know that having clean teeth gets you reward points at Cory Liss Orthodontics? Ask us about our new Rewards Program at your next appointment.

How To Handle an Orthodontic Emergency

Truth be told, wearing orthodontic braces tends to be emergency free.  There are times of frustration due to a pokey wire or sore gums; but rarely is there a situation requiring emergency treatment.

Having said that, how do you recognize common orthodontic frustrations, and how do you handle them?

Common orthodontic inconveniences are:

  • Tooth and/or gum discomfort
  • Poking Wire
  • Loose Bracket
  • Lost or broken elastics
Your Calgary Orthodontic Team will advise you of potential nuisances when your braces go on.  They'll probably give you extra elastics and orthodontic wax to handle broken elastics and a pokey wire.

Regular tooth brushing and rinsing with warm salt water will take care of sore gums and don't hesitate to take some ibuprofen (as long as you're not allergic) for any tooth discomfort.

So, most orthodontic annoyances can be handled easily at home.  If you have a loose bracket that requires recementing, then you'll need to made an appointment with your orthodontist, who will probably have emergency time set aside in his schedule.

Don't let the odd orthodontic annoyance spoil your experience of wearing braces.  Braces are creating a great smile and healthy bite for you.  Remember the positives and don't hesitate to talk to your Calgary Orthodontist if you have further questions.

Why Get Orthodontic Braces?

It's common to believe that the benefit of seeking orthodontic treatment is just about straightening teeth.
Straight teeth, a beautiful smile and increase in self esteem are just a few of the benefits of wearing orthodontic braces.

Do you know that choosing orthodontic treatment for your child helps insure their overall health throughout their lifetime.

Studies show that individuals who have worn braces have a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

But orthodontic braces aren't just for teenagers. 20% of all orthodontic patients are over the age of 18 and people over the age of 60 have had successful orthodontic treatment.

Do something today to increase your overall health - seek an orthodontic consultation from a Certified Calgary Orthodontist - and you'll be smiling for more than one reason.

Calgary Braces Expert Shares Brushing Tips

There's nothing as disappointing as removing braces on perfectly straight teeth, only to diagnose tooth decay.

Why can tooth decay be an issue when wearing braces?

More times than not it's due to lack of brushing or poor brushing technique.  Don't fall into the trap of brushing just before bed.  You've probably eaten some sticky food and maybe even drank the odd soda during the day - that means you have to brush more frequently and be more diligent when you brush.

Here are some quick tips on how to avoid increase risk of tooth decay and to keep your teeth clean.
  • Make sure your toothbrush is wet and place about 2 cm of toothpaste on the brush
  • Spread the toothpaste evenly on both your top and bottom teeth
  • Brush carefully for 2 minutes - using a timer can make this part easier
  • Take a sip of water and rinse the mouth, try not to spit the toothpaste out for 30 seconds
  • Don't rinse again and try not to eat or drink anything for 2 hours
  • Make sure you're brushing before bed, and in the morning after breakfast. If you can, carry a toothbrush with you so you can brush after lunch
  • And remember to keep your regular cleaning appointments with your general dentist!

Discover The Benefits Of Orthodontic Braces

Orthodontic braces have become a popular option for straightening teeth amongst adults and teenagers.
Braces today are more esthetically pleasing, some barely noticeable, so going about life remains normal with little or no frustrations.

There are many tangible benefits, apart from a beautiful smile, to straightening teeth.  Crooked teeth are hard to keep clean, as brushing is way more difficult, so teeth are at greater risk of decay and premature loss.

Misaligned teeth also create gum issues, recessions and inflammation that can create long term health issues.
Teeth that are not in correct alignment can cause problems with chewing, speech development and cause the individual to suffer from poor self image.

Orthodontics braces have never been more esthetically pleasing, efficient, affordable with less discomfort.  Don't let the idea of wearing braces stop you from creating a beautiful smile.  Find out from Cory Liss Orthodontics how you can have a healthy, beautiful smile in no time.

Calgary Braces Specialist Shares Thoughts On Orthodontics

So how do orthodontists straighten teeth?

Tooth movement is actually a normal response to light pressures exerted on teeth.  Pressure is applied by using a variety of orthodontic hardware (appliances), the most common being a brace or bracket attached to the teeth and connected by wires.  By tightening wires, the teeth receive the pressure needed to start the alignment process.

However, choosing the most efficient bracketing system makes the process easier, with less discomfort, and less office visits.  At Cory Liss Orthodontics we are proud to offer SureSmile, the latest in orthodontic technology, a system that uses robotically made custom wires.  These custom wires ensure a beautiful end result - that lasts!

If you're contemplating orthodontic treatment call Cory Liss Orthodontics to discuss all your treatment options. Whether it's SureSmile, Invisalign or the Damon Bracketing System, choose an orthodontic team who can get you smiling faster.

The Timing Of Orthodontic Treatment In Calgary

Calgary Orthodontic Specialist
The proper timing of orthodontic treatment is essential to producing the most favorable result.  Each patient is different and therefore requires an individualized approach to treatment.  Some conditions require the attention of the orthodontist as soon as they are detected (e.g. harmful habits).

While others require treatment to coincide with periods of rapid growth or a time where cooperation can be maximized.  Crowding, potential trauma and the eruption status of teeth are other factors that must be taken into consideration.

The timing and approach to orthodontic treatment can be as unique as the individual patient.  Many factors are taken into consideration when a diagnosis is made and the treatment planned.

An orthodontic evaluation is the best way to determine if and when orthodontic treatment is required.
Call us today to schedule your consultation - we'll have you smiling in no time!! 403-287-0746

The Straight Talk On Orthodontics In Calgary

Calgary Braces Specialist
Calgary Orthodontists use many different types of appliances to move teeth.  Simple, limited tooth movements can be accomplished with a plastic retainer that simply pushes or pulls teeth in the desired direction.

Movements are limited because these types of appliances do not have control of teeth in all three planes of space.

More significant tooth movements require braces (orthodontic brackets).  Braces come in many shapes, sizes, colors, styles and essentially act like small handles attached to teeth.  With the addition of the orthodontic wire, these handles slowly move teeth into place.  Currently, many orthodontists are moving towards braces with less friction.  These Self-Ligating braces replace the colored rings on every tooth with small doors.  Less friction means longer appointment intervals, lighter wires and less patient discomfort.

Invisalign is another exciting option, where clear custom fabricated molds are used to slowly move teeth into place.
